No s\u00e9culo XVIII, a lagoa ganhou fama por hist\u00f3rias de cura. O uso desenfreado causou polui\u00e7\u00e3o, mas medidas foram tomadas para preserva\u00e7\u00e3o. Na d\u00e9cada de 1980, foi desativada uma praia artificial e realizadas a\u00e7\u00f5es de despolui\u00e7\u00e3o. Ali ocorreu um sangrento conflito entre os partidos Liberal e Conservador, durante a Revolu\u00e7\u00e3o Liberal no Brasil. Lund testemunhou a guerra e prestou assist\u00eancia m\u00e9dica, sem envolvimento pol\u00edtico. Apesar da vit\u00f3ria dos liberais na ocasi\u00e3o, eles foram derrotados em outro confronto.
